Biomechanics and Orthotics

First a bit of history…In the early stages of our evolution, the terrain upon which we walked was varied and uneven and the foot with its complex set of joints and muscles fit this perfectly. However, now we walk upon hard, man-made surfaces subjecting our feet and legs to low impact repetitive stresses and strains.

Podiatric Biomechanics involves the assessment of the structure, alignment and function of the feet and legs and is required if a patient experiences pain in the foot when moving.

Symptoms

Symptoms are pain in the foot when you walk, run or stand which can also affect your legs, pelvis and spine as they try to misalign in order to ease your foot pain.

Causes

Causes can simply be from ill-fitting shoes and low arched feet (flat feet) or high arched feet. If you have a low-arched (pronated) or high arched (supinated) foot, then you may be more predisposed to problems.

Treatment

Treatment includes a detailed assessment of the structure of the feet and Gait Analysis to help identify factors that may be causing or contributing to any discomfort. We then scan your feet using a highly technical system to design your own personalised orthotics for your feet and no one else’s.

Result

These orthotics are then placed in your shoes to help control the way in which your foot (and therefore the rest of you) function and thus reduce discomfort so you can carry on with normal life.
